11 May 2026 Weeting Heath, Lakenheath Fen and Lynford Arboretum

    Bymail@billneil.co.uk 11 May 202627 May 2026

We drove from The Old Pheasant at 9.15am in direction of Peterborough, Chatteris, Ely and Prickwillow., stopping at RSPB Lakenheath Fen where we just did the little loop around the bend in the river. It was freezing cold and windy and not very conducive to birding. We got very good views of our first Whitethroat…

    10 May 2026 Rutland Water

    Bymail@billneil.co.uk 10 May 202627 May 2026

We set off from Manchester at 9am and took our planned route avoiding motorways which turned out to be a good decision because it was a lovely day, the route  was straightforward and the traffic wasn’t too bad. We drove straight through to Wyndhampton Windmill near Rutland Water for about 12 which was perfect. We…

    Norfolk Holiday May 2006 Introduction

    Bymail@billneil.co.uk 10 May 202627 May 2026

Our, nearly two-week, holiday around Sussex and Norfolk in May 2026 involved us mixing a bit of birding with visiting friends. Over the period we stayed at “The Old Pheasant” at Oakham, near Rutland Water, The Woodcutters Lodge in Lynford Arboretum in Norfolk followed by a night with friends at Bury St Edmunds and two…

Birding Group Visit to Pennington Flashes 28 April 2026

    Bymail@billneil.co.uk 28 April 202629 April 2026

Reports of a Little Gull and some Black-necked Grebes at Pennington encouraged us in our visit there on a – not particularly warm – spring morning. On parking up and getting the scope out, it only took a few minutes to get one of these species and a good year tick.

Birding Group Visit to Burton Mere Wetlands 14 Apr 2026

    Bymail@billneil.co.uk 14 April 202626 April 2026

Our birding group visit to Burton Mere Wetlands on 14th April gave us a couple of good Spring birds – the first Swallows of the year and the first Willow Warbler of the year. A nice feature of the scrape was the presence of half a dozen Mediterranean Gulls in full breeding plumage.

    Bymail@billneil.co.uk 31 March 20261 April 2026

After three weeks of flu, I at last managed to get out of the house and get to the last session of the birding group term, which was to Marbury Park which turned out to be a good morning followed by lunch and a planning session at the Spinner & Bergamot.
