Birding Group Visit to Pennington Flash 20 May 2025
Our visit to Pennington Flash saw us enjoy another fine day but the water levels were incredibly low and some of the ponds had dried out entirely. There was a dry area of about six feet from the ends of the main lake. This meant that the bodies of water weren’t the main interest for…

Birding Group Visit to Macclesfield Forest 6 May 2024
The first birding group outing of May was to Macclesfield Forest on a sunny, but initially cool, day. Although we didn’t see a huge number of birds, we did get a couple of good year ticks and the woods by the Teggnose Reservoir car park were ringing with bird song.

Birding Group Visit to Leosowe Lighthouse and Parkgate 30 Apr 2025
On the penultimate day of April we had intended to go to Parkgate for a high-ish tide of 9.9m at 1:10pm but with some time to spare beforehand we suggested that we go to Leowowe Lighthouse beforehand as there had been some Whinchat and Ring Ousel seen there in recent days. Since noone of the…

WWT Slimbridge 7 – 8 April 2024
On our return from Montacute to Manchester we did our usual stopover at the Tudor Lodge pub in Slimbridge which was as reliable as it usually is with a nice, ground floor, room at the back of the resident’s block. We were quite early getting to Slimbridge so we headed straight for the WWT nature…

Montacute, Ham Wall and Shapwick Heath Nature Reserves 1- 5 April 2025
We drove down to Bristol on the 3rd April and stayed there for a night before moving on to Montacute in Somerset. On our way down we saw lots of Buzzards, a Kestrel and we also got two Red Kites, seen whilst having a cup of tea at Gloucester Services South. On the trip we…

Birding Group Visit to Burton Mere Wetlands and Parkgate 1 Apr 2025
It surely could not be a coincidence that we went to the Wirral for a tide of 9.9 metres at 2:15pm on the first of April. It turned out to be something of an April’s Fool.

Birding Group Brockholes 25 Mar 2025
The birding group visit to Brockholes started to look very unpromising as we approached the site and saw that, where the islands had been, was bare, bulldozed mud with few birds in sight. However, the automatic car park car recognition meant that we would have had to pay for a days parking anyway, so we decided to have a look rather than drive on elsewhere. In the end we were glad we did because we ended up having a good day getting some nice year ticks on a day where it seemed that Spring might not be that far away.
